pl. תְּהֹמֹות comm., a poetic word, pr. water making a noise, in commotion (from the root הוּם), hence-

(1) wave (Welle, Woge), Psa 42:8, תְּהֹום אֶל־תְּהֹום קֹרֵא “wave calleth unto wave,” i.e. wave follows wave without intermission. Pl. Exo 15:5, Exo 15:8 Psa 33:7 Psa 78:15 .

(2) a great quantity of waters, i.q. מַיִם Deu 8:7 Eze 31:4 תְּהֹום רַבָּה ocean, sea, Gen 7:11 Psa 36:7 Amo 7:4 and simply תְּהֹום id., Job 28:14 Job 38:16 , 30 Job 38:30. Hence-

(3) gulf, abyss, even used of the deep hollows of the earth, Psa 71:20. (Syr. ܬܗܘܽܡܐܳ wave, abyss.)
